Khayalethu, a project of Youth for Christ Kwa-Zulu Natal (YFC/KZN) hosted the Ihlokomele Health and Wellness Awareness Campaign at Raisethorpe Community Drop-In Centre on Saturday, 10 August 2019, a day after National Women’s Day that is celebrated and commemorated every year.

The campaign was aimed at encouraging and promoting healthy lifestyles among children and youth living in abandoned buildings and streets of Pietermaritzburg. This campaign follows after an increase in the number of homeless teen moms in the streets of Pietermaritzburg.

Khayalethu Outreach Project Coordinator, Derrick Mabaso said the program started with the beneficiaries taking a hot bath and engaging and listening to speakers from various organisations and institutions such as the South African Police Services, UKZN Student Christian Fellowship, HIV and TB Care. The beneficiaries also received a meal, sanitary pads, and health and screening services.

YFC/KZN Marketing and Communications Officer, Sonti Magota said the organization continues to serve townships, informal settlements and per-rural areas where there is high rate of unemployment and HIV infection, sexual abuse and rape, domestic violence, poverty and a lack of basic amenities. “Giving hope and support to children, youth and women remains our primary objective”, said Magota.
