“We say no to violence against children”, these are the words that were said by the YFC/KZN Change Agents peer educators who were speaking during the 16 Days of Activism to No Violence Against Children and Women Discussion that was on Vuma FM Current Affairs program at 7:00pm on Thursday, 6 December 2018.
The discussion was also supported by the KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Willies Mncunu and other organisations. Grade 11 pupil, Aliyah Ndlovu said violence has a negative impact on children and needs to be addressed. She added that parents must pay close attention to the safety of their children. “We urge parents and guardians to ensure that their children are safe especially during this festive season. For those who are victims of violence, we urge you to break the silence and speak out so that the perpetrators can be brought to book”, said Ndlovu.
Grade 8 pupil, Mmeli Madondo said schools should walk an extra mile in addressing violence and abuse. “Our teachers need to create an environment or a platform for their learners where they can speak freely and comfortably about their problems without any fear”, said Madondo.
