What is the international volunteer programme?
The international volunteer programme is a project that enables international young people to come and volunteer in South Africa working in projects of Youth for Christ/KZN. This enables them to serve young people in a structured programme working alongside South African staff.
Where will I live?
Volunteers live in a house in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. It is situated in the city and can accommodate 9 people. It is helpful to live with other people who are learning and experiencing similar things so that you can support and encourage each other.
What will I do?
Most volunteers work in the Khayalethu project for young people who are living on the streets or are in the process of returning to a family. See Khayalethu Project. However depending on your skills and interests there are opportunities for you to do some work in our admin office, where you could assist with administration, marketing and other skills you may have.
How do I decide what work to do?
You will have an opportunity to see many aspects of what we do, and then will be able to communicate your preference which will be matched with our needs and we will try and find a good match for you to serve.
How long do I stay?
Most volunteers stay between 3 months and 1 year. It takes a while to settle into a new culture, so coming for less time than 3 months is often not helpful. If you stay for longer than 3 months, you will need to apply for a volunteer visa.
How do I apply for a visa?
There is an application form which needs to be completed. This is e-mailed to: [email protected]
This form helps us to make a decision whether you will be accepted to work in our project.
When do I need to start?
Volunteers can arrive at any time of the year, but it is helpful to know that December is our summer holidays, so most people take a break between 16 December to about 8 January. If you are in South Africa over this time, it is a wonderful time to travel as the weather is hot and sunny.
What does it cost?
The cost is currently R4000.00 per month. This covers everything except personal phone calls and holiday costs. (Check the current exchange rate)
