National Child Protection Week is commemorated in the country to raise awareness of the rights of children as articulated in the constitution of the Republic of South Africa and the Children’s Act.
Khayalethu Project hosted this awareness week at Khan Road community, Parents came out in numbers to support this, and the most important thing about their availability is that they were all eager to participate. Parents are always advised to participate in sessions and
campaigns that involve their children.
Zinhle Memela, our community care worker, spoke about the protection of children and their rights; she also emphasised the responsibility parents have in protecting and caring for children. Edutainment portrayed a play of neglected and abused children, it was a very touching scene to watch, and after the play, parents and children were given a platform to ask questions as the community workers provided answers.
Parents and children were given information and steps to take in case of emergencies or should the child feel that they are being abused.
