Lack of love at home

Once in a while new children are identified on the streets of Durban. Tennyson House Outreach Team works hard in bringing about change to the children living on the street. They approach the children in order to find out the reasons that brought them on the street.

One of the children that they identified as new on the street began to share her problem. Her mother passed away few years ago, when she was doing grade 7. She was left with her aunt as her guardian who neglected her basic needs such as Education, clothes and she always went to school without food in her stomach. Her aunt made it difficult for her to approach her, which left her feeling lonely and neglected. She was grieving for her mother and her situation seemed overwhelming. To calm her feelings of loneliness and confusion she began to smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol. This led her to friends who introduced her to dagga and as a result she began to steal at school and at home. She dropped out of school and moved around with friends and they influenced each other negatively which led them to the streets.

Every child has a difficult reason as to why they are living on the streets. The Tennyson House Outreach Team works hard with young people on the street, supporting them to make a decision to leave. When/if they decide to leave, the team place them into the shelter where they receive counselling and take part in a rehabilitation program.
