Last week the Change Agents Project successfully launched their Peer Education Program. Peers and Teachers from 4 High Schools attended the Event.
The following topics were highlighted:
a) Who qualifies to be a peer educator.
b) Roles and duties of a peer educator.
c) Future plans for peer educators per school.
Peer educators seemed eager to be the ones advocating for their peers, they had already identified issues that need to be attended to in their schools and have a plan on how to deal with it.
It was motivating to hear how one Peer encouraged others and gave them the assurance that they have power to do so much more than they think.
Among other issues these were some that the peers identified:
• A Wish to have 100% Pass rate and holding campaigns to encourage learners to form study groups in order to pass all subjects
• A decrease in Teenage Pregnancy
• No Sexual harassment
• Eliminate Substance Abuse
• Wish to collect clothes and food parcels then identify needy families
The Peer Education Program has the potential to change mindsets
and encourage young people to work together.
